Should public high school students be required to pass an exam required for graduation?

Background and context

"A high school diploma acts as the most fundamental gateway to a person realizing her promise and securing her future in adult life. Without this diploma, gainful employment, financial stability, and property ownership become very difficult to obtain. In addition to these practical concerns, a diploma represents the knowledge and skills a person has gained to enable her participation in civic institutions and the actualization of her own life projects. Who earns and who fails to earn a diploma shapes the future socioeconomic makeup of American society by determining what landscape of opportunity is open to young people. High-stakes exit exams also reveal the failures of our society to address past and current discrimination given the achievement gaps they consistently have revealed along racial and class lines."-Stacy Thomas

Good measure: Does it adequately measure learning?

• Standardized testing is an objective measure of learning. All students deserve an equal chance to prove their competency. Testing weeds out those who are more likely to be poor academic performers in colleges and universities.

• Students are proving their knowledge throughout course of study. It is away to evaluate whether or not a student has basic skills and if they are ready to graduate from high school. If student is making A's and B's than there is no point in an exit exam.
