Should we ban plastic shopping bags?

Contents

Background and Context of Debate:

In Australia and other countries, a proposal is being introduced to ban the use of plastic shopping bags. Some people think this is good for the environment and some think it will be a nuisance.

Should we ban plastic shopping bags?

Yes

Plastic bags are bad for the environment.

Plastic shopping bags clog up our oceans, environment and dumps. They are used once or twice then thrown out, often used for bin liners.

If we banned plastic bags, the environment would benefit, we would not use up nearly as much of our natural resources making them and an alternative is easy to find.

An alternative is simple - reusable cloth bags that are good for the environment.

No

Plastic bags are an easy way to carry shopping and people have become accustomed to using them.

Plastic shopping bags have been used for many years and are an easy option for carrying shopping and people use them to line bins and put them out with the rubbish.

People have become accustomed to using plastic bags and it would be hard to go without them.

Plastic bags cannot be replaced.

Plastic bags have many purposes - shopping bags, bin liners, storage etc. Plastic bags really can't be replaced, they are unique and cheap.

Reusable cloth shopping bags can replace plastic shopping bags but without plastic bags, we wouldn't have anything to line a bin with, and plastic is used these days for many things. They can be made cheaply and aren't replacable in many instances.
