Background and context
Israel claimed the Golan Heights from Syria during a war with multiple states in the region. Many decades later, it still holds this territory. Yet, in the context of a larger peace settlement with Palestinians, many are calling for a return to pre-1967 borders, which would include returning the Golan Heights to Syria. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the idea. The debate remains very lively.

Pro
Israel can hand the Golan Heights back for peace and recognition, like it did to Egypt when it handed back Sinai in exchange for peace.
|
Con
- The Golan Heights is a good buffer with Syria. Syria is one of Israel's most aggresive neighbors, and Syria still doesn't recognise the state of Israel. The Golan Heights can be used as a protective territory for Israel.

Israel has established a strong Jewish population, especially in the southern half, where they form a majority. If internationally annexed by Israel, the land would easily be integrated into Israeli society.
