Background and context

Israel claimed the Golan Heights from Syria during a war with multiple states in the region. Many decades later, it still holds this territory. Yet, in the context of a larger peace settlement with Palestinians, many are calling for a return to pre-1967 borders, which would include returning the Golan Heights to Syria. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the idea. The debate remains very lively.

  • Returning Golan Heights can be bargaining chip for peace/recognition. Israel can hand the Golan Heights back for peace and recognition, like it did to Egypt when it handed back Sinai in exchange for peace.

Con

  • The Golan Heights is a good buffer with Syria. Syria is one of Israel's most aggresive neighbors, and Syria still doesn't recognise the state of Israel. The Golan Heights can be used as a protective territory for Israel.

Israel has established a strong Jewish population, especially in the southern half, where they form a majority. If internationally annexed by Israel, the land would easily be integrated into Israeli society.

A substantional amount of Israel's water supply comes from the Golan Heights, it therefore has economical benefits to Israel.
