[Edit] Background and contextIsrael claimed the Golan Heights from Syria during a war with multiple states in the region. Many decades later, it still holds this territory. Yet, in the context of a larger peace settlement with Palestinians, many are calling for a return to pre-1967 borders, which would include returning the Golan Heights to Syria. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the idea. The debate remains very lively. |
