Background and context

Many believe that illegal immigrants committed major crimes by entering a country illegally, and therefore that they should be severely punished, imprisoned, and even deported for that crime. But, this would assume that a felony was committed. Others argue that illegal immigration should be considered a civil crime. Or, at least, that it should be considered a civil crime for those that are already here, as charging illegals with a felony and deporting may be unpalatable and infeasible.
