Is the world suffering because of the ego of the homo sapien?

Contents

Background and Context of Debate:

After reading Eckhart Tolle's book, 'A New Earth', I have come to the conclusion that the ills of the world could be alleviated if we attended to our inflated egos.

GDP: Is our focus on Gross Domestic Product an expression of ego?

Yes

  • Human preoccupation with economic growth demonstrates ego. It is proof positive of the extent to which our ego controls our lives. Countries with high GDP's are considered "strong" and countries with low GDP's are considered "weak". The focus on being "strong" monetarily is an egotistical concern.

No

  • GDP growth expresses the improvement of living standards, not ego. The focus on GDP growth is related to a focus on an economic indicator that correlates closely with living standards.
