It seems to be the opposite of egotistical. Rather, it seems to be concerned mainly with the general public welfare.

Background and context

After reading Eckhart Tolle's book, 'A New Earth', I have come to the conclusion that the ills of the world could be alleviated if we attended to our inflated egos.

GDP: Is our focus on Gross Domestic Product an expression of ego?

[Add New]

Yes

  • Human preoccupation with economic growth demonstrates ego. It is proof positive of the extent to which our ego controls our lives. Countries with high GDP's are considered "strong" and countries with low GDP's are considered "weak". The focus on being "strong" monetarily is an egotistical concern.

[Add New]

No

  • GDP growth expresses the improvement of living standards, not ego. The focus on GDP growth is about considering economic indications that living standards are improving. When GDP rises, in general, living standards improve in an economy. If GDP falls, or fails to keep up with inflation, living standards generally fall. GDP growth, therefore, provides an important indication of the improvement of living standards. And, it is difficult to argue that such a focus on living standards is egotistical. It seems to be the opposite of egotistical. Rather, it seems to be concerned mainly with the general public welfare.
