Tim Johnston. "Kangaroo cull upsets activists". Herald Tribune. March 13, 2008: "What is peculiar about the current debate is that Australia is no stranger to killing kangaroos. Last year the state governments issued permits to cull some 3.7 million kangaroos, about 15 percent of the total population of the four species licensed for commercial exploitation, although the government says that on average less than two-thirds of the quota are actually shot in any given year.
- The kangaroos are sold for meat and leather - kangaroo skin is particularly popular for making sport shoes."
