Can Tran. "Democrat vs. Republican: Political philosophies." Helium: "Democrats believe in a bigger role of the central government. This applies to the federal government and state governments. In regards to a national level, the federal government will have more power. In regards to a state level, the state government will have more power." It is wrong, therefore, to think of the expansion of federal power as a reduction of state power. It is not a zero-sum game in this way. Rather, Democrats advocate for both strong government at all levels of government. Republicans believe in smaller, weaker, more de-regulated forms of govt at all levels.
